:Pause:: Just the cost of one pizza that we wallop away pays for annual membership, keeps a child out of trouble after school, as well as gives free access to wellness, dental and eye care at Newark’s Boys and Girls Club nestled across Avon Avenue and Stratford Place, one of most dangerous intersections in the country, with 24 hour police presence.

This is what Kavita Mehra, who works at BGCN, has to say: “We seek to transform children’s lives by closing the opportunity gap.” Kavita, a Columbia University alum, is the Chief Transformation Officer of BGCN. Kavita began her career working with survivors of domestic violence. (Read her interview here http://goo.gl/BwDj6v )

BGCN, founded in 1938, caters to 1,148 members and stands out as an oasis in the Newark neighborhood, a beacon of hope. Incidentally Shaquille O’Neal, who is an active alum of BGCN, spent his early childhood in the troubled neighborhoods of Newark.

Let’s leave the polarized world and do our part by buying tickets or making a small donation to enable BGCN’s “Evening of the Stars” scheduled for April 11, 2016 reach its fundraising goal. Goonj. Means echo in Hindi. But right now I am talking of the organization Goonj that has really impressed me. Started by Anshu Gupta, it strikes me as special for the following reasons:
1. It repositions urban waste by not only distributing but restructuring and reusing it.
2. By restructuring, it is able to give employment to people who are the users or such
3. This way the user is able to use the material with dignity and pride, as it is something he/she worked for rather than just got as charity.
Do explore the website and tell me your thoughts on it.
Here's the link: www.goonj.org
I know I should have posted as a link but started off writing my thoughts on mobile..... Well.... ;)

How And Why We Give To Charity

How And Why We Give To Charity In the giving season, we talk to philosopher Peter Singer about rethinking how and why we give to charity. It's the giving season. Maybe you do, maybe you don't. But many Americans do. Give. And it's interesting to look at where they give and why, exactly, we give.
