Employee Sent Home After Shorts From Her Own Store Deemed 'Too Revealing,' She Says

A former JCPenney employee has taken to Twitter to illustrate just how hypocritical dress codes for women can be. "Boss sent me home for wearing 'too revealing' shorts that I bought from the store I work at in the career section," Sylva Stoel tweeted on Friday.

Thoughts?

Vidushi Sharma

Vidushi Sharma Women's dress codes are often frustrating and contain many double standards. Have you guys ever experienced something like this, or having an authority figure tell you to dress a certain way when you feel their opinion is illegitimate?

0

Anju Sharma

Anju Sharma You know, I do not like this discrepancy and double standards at all. But then also I see men dress so much more "professionally". Maybe if they started to wear super tight lycra short shorts (ugh!) the public at large might start complaining!

Sarah Kimball

Sarah Kimball This is a great question to raise. I wear leggings and yoga pants all the time, and sometimes get questionable looks. 50 years ago, I would have been told to go home and change. The fact that I only get "looks" feels like progress to me. I'm glad people like this woman are speaking out. The rules of JC Penny seemed fine to me, but the execution shows that we still need to call out these issues.

Vidushi Sharma

Vidushi Sharma Sarah, I never thought about it that way, in terms of looks etc actually representing progress from the point we came from many years ago. Thanks!

I was watching some of the videos Vidushi had mentioned in her comment on the last Fashion post. Here is one I came across of Iran's styles over the last 100 years. Puts history in a completely different perspective!

Vidushi Sharma

Vidushi Sharma I hadn't even seen this one! I was pretty shocked at the transition to 1980. Here is an explanation of the history behind each shot! http://www.vox.com/2015/2/21/8078025/iran-style-century

Anju Sharma That was amazing! Thank you for the link Vidushi Sharma it actually reminded me of some forgotten Iranian history.

Emma Zahren-Newman

Emma Zahren-Newman Wow it looks like this video would have been a really fun to be a part of. I would like to see videos such as this one from other cultures. This seems more american-centered, am I right?

0

Vidushi Sharma

Vidushi Sharma ^ Yeah, I agree! But this does seem like a very fun video to make-- time consuming but surely worth it for the 5million+ likes. I've seen a few like these for the makeup/hair of different cultures over time. Here's the one on India-- the series is called "100 Years of Beauty" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ih7bldj2nJE

Kids Point Out Dark Side Of Fashion Ads That We've All Been Ignoring

"She seems to have an illness." "Maybe she's drunk." "Maybe she took some pills with drugs or stuff like that." Those are not the feelings typically expressed by adults when they see a fashion campaign. But get a group of kids together, and the not-so-pleasant truth comes out.

Kids are great...

DIY: party outfit <3

8 steps to a perfect outfit!

This is the method I used to make my Mariah shirt... Surprisingly easy and guaranteed to fit perfectly every time! I attached a bra closure in the back by sewing it on and using fabric glue to hold the edges in place. You can use a serger so the edges are finished properly, but I didn't see a need to (the material of my tank top didn't fray at all after cutting).

Emma Zahren-Newman

Emma Zahren-Newman Really cool! I made a shirt once (like this one: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0ysi8A_ejKY/UEJDuNAJ_1I/AAAAAAAADc0/QM3IEhcUoxU/s1600/postCYMERA_20120819_142254.jpg )-- but instead of a dress, i made it a shorter cropped shirt that could go well with hight-waisted shorts... I'll have to try this one!

0

Vidushi Sharma

Vidushi Sharma Emma Zahren-Newman you should share yours too! That's pretty cool. Christina, when did you start learning how to do this, and were you self-taught? Have you found the cosplay community an accepting/easy one to get involved with?

0

Chrissy Caliginous

Chrissy Caliginous Largely self-taught from internet tutorials. Some friends of mine are very experienced cosplayers in terms of sewing prop making, theater makeup, and wig cutting/styling, so I pick up techniques from them when I can.

1

Chrissy Caliginous

Chrissy Caliginous The cosplay community is pretty welcoming and I've made lots of friends through it. However, there are definitely issues with the cosplay community on tumblr in particular, which I won't describe in detail, but it can get really toxic.

Italy Meets India in a Lavish Wedding to Remember

Earlier this month, Vanity Fair Italia captured the wedding to end all weddings, in Puglia, Italy.

Wow- India meet Italy in a dramatic, over-the-top wedding including Florence and the Machine, garden-themed tables, acrobats, and hologram dancers...

Anju Sharma

Anju Sharma It irks me to see the sheer drainage of money down the pipe. What purpose did it serve? Not trying to be an idealist, but seriously, how many of India's villages could this "wedding" have taken care of? There really is no need to be sparse and austere and yes you definitely have the right to enjoy the money you earn, but there has to be some kind of perspective. And awareness of surroundings. Sheeesh.....

Vidushi Sharma

Vidushi Sharma Agreed, it is quite as ridiculous as most of the galas for the rich, by the rich.
