Match 4 - Google DeepMind Challenge Match: Lee Sedol vs AlphaGo
YouTube l https://www.youtube.com/

Computer uses intuition to beat human Grandmaster at Go

Google’s AlphaGo bested Go grandmaster Lee-Se-dol 4-1 in the series played in Seoul recently. This was a marquee win for Artificial Intelligence that follows the IBM’s Deep Blue that defeated Gary Kasparov in 1997. This feat was considered a moonshot two years ago when the AlphaGo project started.

Go is an ancient 2500 year old Chinese game played on a 19 by 19 grid where players try to get territorial advantage. The sheer number of potential moves makes it a game of intuition driven calculations for territorial advantage.

Chris Madison, Google intern from the Deep Mind team, explains ( see 15min to 27min in video covering the 4th match which was won by Mr.Lee) how they build a neural network program consisting of policy networks (which mimic human behavior observed from games played by professionals); reinforcement learning (self-learning by playing itself) and value networks (which maximize the probability of winning). According to him the initial success to the solution came by attempting to mimic human behavior. He said the neural network problem could be metaphorically described like a wave or pattern acting or propagating through the Go Board at the lowest layer, upon which the reinforcement and policy networks are superimposed. The connections in the network are assigned weights according to their strength which was computed using self and human learning. This was important since each Go game ends up differently and can diverge vastly from other games, which ruled out reliance on a Go game database to predict moves. After having played humans and itself over millions of times the AlphaGo incrementally learnt from its mistakes, which allowed it to focus on a narrow set of outcomes rather than using brute force to calculate all combinations. It would choose a move based on a value function which would attempt to maximize the probability of winning.

While use of AI presents interesting applications in science, medicine and finance, it also raises several interesting questions for humanity:

- Is there a threat from AI powered automous robotic systems?

- Use of AI in self-driven cars. What would the self driven car do if it were faced with the choice of trampling a toddler against a dozen pedestrians on the other side of the road?

-Are humans in essence a neural network of patterns which define our memories, emotions and personality?

-How is consciousness different from bundled attributes? Is it also a pattern?
-Can empathy and mindlessness be defined by networks?

This is what Mr. Lee had to say to reporters about his loss: “I don’t think my defeat is a defeat for humanity. It’s my weakness, not the weakness of humanity”

What is Machine Intelligence vs. Machine Learning vs. Deep Learning vs. Artificial Intelligence (AI)? | Numenta

We are frequently asked how we distinguish our technology from others. This task is made difficult by the fact that there is not an agreed vocabulary; everybody uses the above terms (and other associated terms) differently. In addition, the commonly understood meaning of some of these terms has evolved over time.

A good dicussion on differences between classical Artificial intelligence; Simple Neural Networks and biological Neural Networks.

Action Video Games Strengthen The Brain

Amid the controversy around video games, more scientific evidence is emerging that might allow us to view those action-packed computer or Xbox games in a more positive light. One new study, completed by researchers in China, examined the impact intense video gaming had on certain brain subregions.

Incase your mom tries to tell you that video games make your brain turn into mush...

Project M - Project M 3.6 Full Changelist

Project M is a community-made mod of Brawl inspired by Super Smash Bros. Melee's gameplay designed to add rich, technical gameplay to a balanced cast of characters while additionally enhancing the speed of play.

Here's the Full Changelist for Project M 3.6. Looks neat-- doesn't change much for me at this point, but what do you think?

Youngbin Yoon

Youngbin Yoon I like to play as Sheik so this tells me I have to start using throws more than smashes!

Steve Ashokaan Oh yeah, I've played Sheik a bit. Pretty great character, but played by a lot of people now!

Lalka Bunny I don't know much about video game graphics, but I have seen some impressive stuff already out there. It makes me think that they could execute this well enough to get users! What do you think, Jesse? I

Project M - Characters

Project M is a community-made mod of Brawl inspired by Super Smash Bros. Melee's gameplay designed to add rich, technical gameplay to a balanced cast of characters while additionally enhancing the speed of play.

Okay, my friends are really into this game, so I'm going to try to start playing. Does anyone have any suggestions on which character I should try to work with first? Here's a link with the options.

Youngbin Yoon

Youngbin Yoon Here's a link to the rankings of the characters (http://www.eventhubs.com/tiers/projectm/)

Youngbin Yoon

Youngbin Yoon I would take that list with a grain of salt though --- some of the higher ranked characters are not intuitive to start with (I'm assuming you're new to Super Smash Brothers in general). You definitely want to pick a character that bests suits you. I'd say the most basic consideration is weight. Some characters are heavy and move slowly, but get the added benefit of not getting knocked off the stage easily. The converse holds true for lighter characters. It's best to experiment with a few characters and see what works best for you. I love Sheik personally, though (s)he is really light and fast. Zero Suit Samus is also light and fast. Mario and Link are of medium weight, if I recall correctly. Bowser and Ganondorf are really heavy. So, my advice is to mess around with each "weight class" and, once you've found which weight class you enjoy most, try all the characters of that class and then pick your favorite! Good luck!

Emma Zahren-Newman Actually-- Zero Suit Samus is a medium-weight character-- but her max fall speed isn't too fast. However, her fall acceleration is fast, so she gets combed like a fast faller. Steve, you might want to take into account this factor: characters fall at different speeds and accelerations. So, weight determines base knockback (and thus hitstun) and horizontal launch resistance, while fall speed mainly affects vertical launch resistance. The lighter the character, the greater the hitstun. Youngbin is right, play around with lots of characters, feel them out. Let us know how it goes! I'm thinking of switching soon-- Captain Falcon and I aren't meshing as I initially expected.

New Course!

Category : Games

A splatoon DLC update released a new course for users to play on! Bluefin Depot is an old railway port on the ocean that is now used as an epic arena for turf wars and ranked battles. This map is the most complicated yet. It has two centeral points where players tend to get caught up in tense battles with other players. In this case, it is usually more than just two players fighting for turf, but many players from each team will join the fight due to these locations critical advantage to the controling team. Bluefin Depot also has more than one way to advance into the other players ink. There are many shortcuts and passages. If you are not paying attention, you can get lost on Nintiendos largest Splatoon Course yet.

Strategy Tip: Instead of always fighting on the ground with a roller or blaster, try climbing up high with a sniper to pick off your enemies from the many hidden outposts in Bluefin Depot.
