'Thought vectors' could revolutionize artificial intelligence - ExtremeTech

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use. Despite all the recent hullabaloo concerning artificial intelligence, in part fueled by dire predictions made by the likes of Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk, there have been few breakthroughs in the field to warrant such fanfare.

"Thoughts are just these great big vectors, and that big vectors have causal powers. They cause other big vectors, and that's utterly unlike the standard AI view that thoughts are symbolic expressions."

New Theory Cracks Open the Black Box of Deep Learning

"The most important part of learning is actually forgetting."

- "Algorithms give the illusion of being unbiased but are written by people and trained on socially generated data. So they can encode and amplify human biases. "

-"Algorithms can lead to inequitable outcomes"

We may not face an existential danger from AI yet. However, real actors would certainly take advantage of garb of AI driven by black-box algorithms. This becomes even more relevant when AI/Deep Learning incorporates unstructured data with limited contextual training to draw conclusions. Think of social media feeds, AI driven hiring processes.

We can reprogram life. How to do it wisely | Juan Enriquez
YouTube l https://www.youtube.com/

Oftentimes we have a knee-jerk reaction to taking sides on gene alteration and mutation of lifecode. We encounter these choices everyday as we walk down the isles of grocery stores. It certainly begs a deeper analysis on what is right or wrong about humans tampering with the genetic code around us.

Juan Enriquez in this Ted Talk sets the discussion in the right context. “For four billion years, what lived and died on this planet depended on two principles: on NATURAL SELECTION AND RANDOM MUTATION. And what we've done is created this completely PARALLEL evolutionary system where we are practicing UNNATURAL SELECTION AND NON-RANDOM MUTATION.

My take on it is that sometimes the dangers from accelerated mutation may show up after much longer cycles than those used by FDA or other agencies to bless these efforts. In fact, the environmental balance may be altered in ways unfathomable. However, I do not take the stance that all alteration or mutation is bad. The question is who will adequately police this effort and who takes responsibility of Mr. Evil taking over?
Juan makes interesting arguments to lay the discussion it its proper context. “We've been doing ‘alteration’ for thousands of years, which is breeding, changing, mixing, matching all kinds of life-forms, and we accelerate it.”
“Humble mustard weed has been modified so that if you change it in one way, you get broccoli. And if you change it in a second way, you get kale. And if you change it in a third way, you get cauliflower.”

“Few things on Earth are less natural than a cornfield. You will never, under any scenario, walk through a virgin forest and see the same plant growing in orderly rows at the same time, nothing else living there. When you do a cornfield, you're selecting what lives and what dies. And you're doing that through unnatural selection. It's the same with a wheat field, it's the same with a rice field.”
“A non-random mutation is beer. It's wine. It's yogurt. How many times have you walked through the forest and found all-natural cheese? Or all-natural yogurt? So we've been engineering this stuff.”

Anju Sharma Genetic alteration to me seems to be leading a path towards alienisation of humanity. (I know that's not a word mishti it's okay...) There should be no reason for gene alteration other than to save a life. Faster, stronger, better, is not what it was supposed to be. Change that what you made yourself. Plants and animals are not creation so leave them alone.

Hubble: Galaxies Across Space and Time [Ultra HD, Captioned]
YouTube l https://www.youtube.com/

The sky looks the same behind every wall, unless you are in the Southern Hemisphere! "This award-winning short film transforms images and data from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope into a voyage that sweeps viewers across the universe and back into cosmic history.

The film opens with looming images of two mature galaxies that are relatively nearby Earth, and then pans through the vibrant and diverse panorama of thousands of galaxies in an image from the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey. The ensuing 3-D journey through these galaxies provides more than just a new perspective in space; it also takes the audience back in time. Because light takes time to journey across space, the galaxies farther away from Earth are seen further back in cosmic history. The virtual voyage reveals galaxies as they appeared billions of years ago, when they were still in the process of forming."

Whirlpool Galaxy ( M51) A Seyfert type II galaxy, M51's spiral structure has been enhanced by a most apparent close encounter with its smaller neighbor, NGC 5195. Surprisingly, eight years separates the discoveries of these two galaxies.

Exoplanets or planets orbiting other stars like are Sun are under intense focus. One of the methods to look for planets orbiting the star is to look for relative dip in intensity of light from the star which will dip as the planet passes in front of it. The Kepler space telescope has been most used to investigate exoplanets in the search for habitable planets and life in the universe. In this particular example I look at the star WASP43 which has been found to have a Jupiter like planet known as "hot" Jupiter ( with a 1.8 times mass) because it orbits very close to the star with an orbital period of only 0.81 days. This data was collected over a 12 hour period yielding a distinct V shape corresponding to the transit of the hot Jupiter like planet transiting in front of WASP 43. The shaded portion represents the predicted transit period, the red dots are the reference points and the black dots represented the data captured by me. WASP 43 is 80 parsecs or about 260 light years away from the Earth.

The night, it is deserted
from the mountains to the sea.
But I, the one who rocks you,
I am not alone!
The sky, it is deserted
for the moon falls to the sea.
But I, the one who holds you,
I am not alone !
The world, it is deserted.
All flesh is sad you see.
But I, the one who hugs you,
I am not alone!
Gabriela Mistral

NGC 3324 has been named after the Chilean Nobel laureate whose profile it resembles. NGC 3324 is 7500 light years away located in the Carina constellation. This rich nebular cloud resulted in intense formation stars, of which some very hot blue stars are clearly visible in the image.
